Cookeville, TN

S.T.O.P. stands for the Saint Thomas Outreach Program , which is a ministry to anyone in Putnam, Overton, or Jackson County needing temporary financial assistance with home /apartment rent, home mortgage payments, or utility bills. In-person interviews for assistance are done on Tuesday mornings from 10:00-11:15AM in the Fr. McGivney Room of the Parish Hall.

In the Gospel, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, remembering that He said “Whatever you do for the least of mine, you do for me.”

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the Church Office number (931) 526-2575 ext. 250, and leave a voicemail message with your name, phone number, and what you need assistance with. Calls are typically responded to within 48 hours. STOP members work with discretion and pastoral concern. Please note, STOP members call from
their personal phones and therefore block the number.

S.T.O.P. aims are to:

  • assist individuals/families in financial need with one time rent, mortgage, or utility payments
  • refer individuals/families we are unable to assist to other resources in their home community

The STOP Committee is always looking for new members. If you are interested in this ministry, you can contact Susan O’Connor at
931-526-2575 ext. 222.

What is involved in being a member?

S.T.O.P. Committee members receive emailed voicemail recordings of calls made to the S.T.O.P. number (931)256-2575 ext. 250, which they follow up on by calling the person who left the message and arranging an interview. The members then meet weekly on Tuesday mornings from 10:00-11:15AM in the Fr. McGivney Room in the Parish Hall to do in-person interviews for assistance. After each interview, the members discuss the request and decide as a group what assistance can be provided.

Benefits of being a S.T.O.P. member

This is an excellent opportunity to follow Jesus by acting on “Whatever you do for the least of mine, you do for Me.” It is also an
opportunity for social interaction with similarly inspired parishioners.
